London commute? Get something cheap off Ebay, and a bloody great lock.

I just put a deposit down on a Specialized Tricross Sport, you could do a lot worse for a commuter bike.

So much to choose from. But you probably want to be able to mudguards on, may be panniers? (or ok with rucksack), you probably don't want really narrow tyres, something simple to maintain (may be single speed?), so hybrid or may be crossbike - this bike is good value and theres a single speed version. Whatever you choose make sure you try and get properly sized for the bike. I personally wouldnt go ebay unless a) you really know what you are doing and b) you know the bike has not been nicked
