I'd definitely say you need to try the MBR run at CYB next time you go as it's a bit rougher in places and helps build confidence. If you have done the rock garden sections at Cannock you should have a good idea of what black runs can contain. I find that I am very comfortable on any reds I find, but some blacks I can lose confidence quickly however most blacks fall into one of two categories:
Similar to a flowy red but steeper with the occasionally bonkers feature/large drop
Generally quite rough and ready without anything overly mad

I don't really know what location you're in, but Dalby forest has some great black sections/features, and if you find it all too much you can peel off and enjoy a great red (with some black features included to build confidence). It also has a really nice skills area to play on in the middle. That way you won't be stuck on a 10+ mile black run if you decide you don't like it and can still get a good ride in.

JGS, when was the last time you were at Coed y Brenin? There have been some changes to the MBR route. The drops on the "Abel" section, for example, are now far bigger, nearer the size of the Caddon bank ones in Innerleithen - but without a chicken run.

It's been about a year since I have been and looking at Youtube it does appear to have changed a fair bit. Those drops don't look too outrageous for a black, but I do think the OP should probably scope them out before they hit them if they aren't confident at drops.

They're not outrageous, no, but they're surprisingly large, especially if you've been riding there for years, and then sudenly there's a 2-foot drop where there wasn't before

Put a 2-foot hole right outside your bed in the morning, then step out not realising it's there, definitely makes for a "What the..." moment

2ft isn't too bad, and I think in this instance we are trying to convey the message that if it's your first time on a black you should be scoping things before hitting it blind. I do get your point though and if I was hitting something familiar and it had been changed significantly I'd be in for a shock too.
