weird garden mushrooms

Any gardening buffs out there able to help out?
Whilst setting up / testing a new hosepipe today I sprayed some mushrooms that were growing at the bottom of the garden and one of them tore under the pressure of the hose and burst into a cloud of brown smoke....of course this made me curious so I gave one a little kick and it ripped open and a clump of what looked just like dried mud fell out, gave it a spray with the hose and upon contact with water it puffed into brown smoke again.
Upon closer inspection the mushrooms seem to have the normal (but really small) stalk bit then the top cap is hollow with this dried dirt like thing inside. I might just be really stupid and this is normal for a growing mushroom but I thought I would check - any ideas as to whether they are safe or should I consider killing these things off?
I wonder how long it will be before someone makes a magic mushroom joke.....

I agree, It does sound like a puffball. From the description I assume it wasn't massive and was, well, brown! This would according to any Mycologist, be an Umber Brown Puffball - Lycoperdon umbrinum. They are pretty cool as fungi goes and there are lots of puffball species, including Giant Puffballs which can be as big as a football, mad or what!Giant XTC Pro-Carbon

P.S don't kill them they are quite harmless and should be regarded as quite beautiful and desirable to have.Giant XTC Pro-Carbon
