96 Zaskar Update

Hey guys looking at getting backon the bike and was wanting to update my old Zaskar, thing is i am not sure where to start, Obviously some riser bars to replace the flats and maybe a higher rise shorter stem (its a bit stretched out just now), but was thinking of some new forks (currently has manitou sx ti's on it) what would be a good fork at a good price? I saw a set of Rock Shok Tora 318's for £150 and they look good, would they be up for hitting some bigger stuff? I am sure even the cheap forks would be an improvement on a 14 year old design now. Would like to put discs on so looks like i need a adaptor for the back and a new set of wheels. If anyone can give any advice that would be great.
Will just be keeping the current group set (full LX)

Do you have disc ready wheels?
What size steerer does it take?
Photos of your bike would greatly assist in this matter.0 -
Hi
Not at the moment but can get them it has XT V brakes on it i understand for discs need disc compatible hubs and discs and levers and an adaptor for the rear as it has no disc mounts, hydraulic is the way to go i reckon., Updating the forks are the main issue as dont really know what is what, pretty sure its a 1 1/8th steerer.
Only pic i have ATM im afraid0 -
i have a 96 zaskar le, is a inch and eigth threadless steerer. Make sure the forks you buy have v brake mounts, unless you upgrade all in one go.0

A friend has a late 90's Zaskar team, he still runs it on V's quite succesfully although he did have Magura hydraulic rim brakes for a while they were heavier with no better braking (he says).
SimonCurrently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Vs can be made to work very well - I still run them on my Zaskar.

Yeah the V's are great, just looking to update it. Anyone any experience with rear disc adaptors?
What about forks what kind of travel could this frame handle im guessing no more than 100mm? The forks i mentione above are longer but can you run lots of sag? Would be better over the bumps with a bit of sag anyway.
Nice bike! the carbon one looks really good.0 -
480mm axle to crown forks ie many 100mm sus forks are about the limit really.0

OK so i have found these
Rock Shox Tora SL Solo Air Forks TurnKey
or
Rockshox Recon Silver TK Forks
What ones would you recommend?0 -
They are the same thing, as far as I know. Go for whichever is cheapest. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

DO NOT use a rear disc adaptor! I put one on my old zaskar, same sort of age, and it howled like a banshee. used magura hs33 brakes and they were awsome0
-
Recon Silver has slightly lighter, butted upper tubes.0
-
So the Air Toras wouldnt be better than the coil spring Recons?0
-
Supersonic do you know off hand what steerer length the zaskar requires? I might just try and pick up set of second hand forks, would 2007 rockshox still be good have they changed much over the last few yeas?0
-
the air toras are different, not better, except the 318 air which is superb. Many sub models. The steerer you require depends on stack height of your headset and stem too.0
-
Ball park?whats yors got on it ATM?0
-
about 190mm for the 18 inch0
-
Thanks, Decided i am going to try and pick up a set of Tora 318's Air or Spring whatever comes up from ebay. Suspension is complicated these days so many models0
-
Is it possible to get a new steerer tube fitted to forks? If so what sort of cost would be involved0
-
No, is a one time fit.0

Ok thanks!0
