Hi guys.

I'm Looking to get my bike built up from scratch, and I'm not sure about halfords construcitng it, as I've heard a few bad stories. So, does anyone know any decent and reliable LBS's in the east midlands that would build up a bike at a reasonable price?

Any help would be appreicated, as one place quoted me 150 quid!

Thanks in advance,

Liam

Are you wanting them to take a box of bits and assemble it completely?

    Yes.

One place quotes me 50 quid for that, and another quoted me 150 quid.

And the only reliable shop that I know in Leicester won't build anything that has hydraulic disc's on it for some reason. The bloke said he doesn't like to mess with them.

So, as a newbie I'm looking for a place that will construct my bike properly, but at a fair price. 150 quid seems a bit steep.
  • 150 sounds right up the alley for the price, shops are normally 40-50 an hour for services, at the very minimum, and building a bike takes a few hours. Doesn't sound too steep to me.
  • Why not simply have them fit the bottom bracket and headset? Maybe face the calliper mounts if it's a new or resprayed frame.
The rest you can have a go at yourself.
Invest £40 or so in a basic tool kit, and with a thorough read of the Parktools website your newly acquired skills will start to pay dividends before you know it.

That place wouldn't fill me with a lot of confidence if he doesn't like hydraulic disc.

Leicester way, I'm not too sure on for good LBS. I'm ok with Derby and Nottingham way though. Leisure Lakes, near Nottingham would charge you about £90 for the build and both mechanics there are excellent

If you are like Northampton way, then go Leisure Lakes in Daventry. Not sure on the prices, but its a top quality shop.

Being form Leicester myself, I haven't found any bike shops worth leaving my bike with yet. I now use a bike shop in Rugby - PM me for details if you want.
  • As an alternative, would it be a good idea to let Halfords build the bike, and then take it to the reputable mechanic to check whether everything is ok. In theory should be much cheaper as it shouldn't take long time.

(We are also collecting the bike from Halfords, and were thinking to go this route.)

Thanks Monkey, I may actaully do that.

The people at my halfords are there more because it's job, rather than because they know and understand bikes.

Which is okay, but when you pay a grand for a bike, you want it built in the correct way.

    +1 for the DIY
Get the shop to do headset and BB, buy the tools and see if you have a friend who can come help put it together, then you'll have the experience you need to maintain and fine tune your £1k bike
