I'M CONSIDERING BUYING A SECOND HAND FRAME (MAYBE UPTO 4 YRS OLD) AND WAS WONDERING IF THEY DETERIORATE OVER TIME/MILES.THE FRAME WILL BE FROM AN ORBEA ORCA SO SHOULD BE TOP QUALITY CARBON.
THE MILES MUST TAKE THEIR TOLL ON THE FRAME AND MORE SO MAYBE,THE FORKS BUT TO WHAT EXTENT?
ANY IDEAS? THANKS

it is supposed to stand fatigue well, problems start when its been stressed beyond its limits, cant see if its had a fall or the forks have run into anything. only the rider will really know that.
  • If you can, find out the weight of the last user
It might have been a 20 stone tele tubby.

And turn your caps lock off. It's considered SHOUTING.

I think anyone with three exclamation marks after their name probably is shouting!

Carbon doesn't deteriate, it breaks! Unless damaged it wont be affected by just being ridden.

Carbon isn't durable at all, it's about as brittle and fragile as these.

Probably - seeing as diamonds are carbon.

As has been said, 4 years of general riding shouldn't be an issue it's whether it's been crashed/abused in that time. Then again my 2008 Roubaix has been over a car bonnet (with me attached) and also into a wall at 10-15mph (again with me attached), it's got a few scratches but not snapped on me yet, ofc it could do that next ride...
  • I hate carbon fibre frames. But purely for cosmetic reasons, I have to admit.

However, there is no reason why they should not last. In addition, you are talking about a 4 years old frame, in my world this is a nearly new one. I've seen some Look of the mid 90s in pretty good shape. The resistance to fatigue of composite materials is by far superior to metal alloys (including titanium alloys, sold as everlasting).

Once you have inspected there are no cracks, you could buy with confidence. The weight of the previous rider is nonsense. If he was a big guy and the frame has survived it is testimony of a good product. With a new one, you never know...

Why do we keep getting these questions over carbons durability? FFS we get on a modern jet plane without question and fly thousands of miles without asking if its composite wings and other panels are going to break up! Do bike manufacturers sell frames that are going to fail knowing they'll get sued to oblivion?

Obviously don't get it wet though

People might "look" at your post, but they won't read it - because it's not easily readable.

After that comment though, you may have burnt your bridges anyway.

    Good luck.

  • All the paranoia surrounding carbon frames does tend to put me off a bit...will it dissolve in water, will that head-on impact with a bumble bee cause irreparable damage etc etc etc.
Fortunately I couldn't afford one anway, so I'll sleep easy at night. :)

I agree. Let the OP make his own mind up about buying a second-hand carbon frame since he doesn't seem the sort of person to take advice.
