The last stretch from Walton was diverted to a non-flooded road. As a result, the course was a few miles shorter. The last climb was replaced by two smaller ones.
  • Yes it was a relief to see the Knighton two miles sign at the top of the last hill. Realised that they had cut Presteigne only on the last climb. Four of us did it, mixture of fast group work and solo in the areas where you just can't gather, especially in the conditions. We all admitted in the car on the way home that if any one of us while assembling the bikes in the car park had said let's knock this on the head we'd all have agreed. Glad we didn't. I was riding brand new GP 4000s and made the mistake of putting 9 bar in the front tyre. After an interesting slide at 35km gone I dropped the pressure, but should have wet and dried them before. They were just right in the last 40km. Anyway a bunch of old oarsmen had a nice day out on the water. A special thanks to those at the last feeding station who helped us put a chain back together with a spare link and pin pusher. My thoughts were with those we passed who punctured. See you all next year in the sun, it is a lovely area of the world and the event management make it even nicer.

I missed because the complete lack of grub (or water  ) on the first & only feedstop of the Little Devil route of the Devil Ride sportif put me right off Epic organised events...

Dont let that put you off, therre was plenty of both on this ride you missed a good one :D

Oddly though after long distance runs, i am normaly stiff after the 2 nd day but riding is a different animal, legs are a bit tight but no problems just completed a 26 mile loop.

Fair weather cyclists missed a good one even with the rain

Does your little bikey wikey go rusty or fall to bits in the rain

Maybe credit to those who rode in the conditions but I do`nt think it should be shame on those who did`nt! I live quite close to Knighton and am fortunate enough to be able to ride a lot of the roads / lanes in the Autumn Epic route regularly. I`d entered to try to get a silver time to go with my Devil Ride silver...but when I saw the weather decided I would 1. not achieve that and 2 . thoroughly dislike the riding. If I`d driven a few hours to the event then maybe I would have ridden, but it`s very local to me.

During Sunday morning I recorded 34.8mm rain at home, which is about 2 weeks worth for around here. I went out for a ride in the afternoon and teh floods / debris / road damage from water was the worst I`ve seen here since the deluge of July 2007.

Fair play too to riding a hybrid, whyever not in those conditions! I`ve ridden both Autumn Epic and Trans Cambrian in the past years on aMTB with slicks / rigid forks and really appreciated teh extra braking power and control; although I now do ride a road bike for sportives
  • I've got to confess, like JamesBwmb, I also live very close to Knighton and didn't ride. Spent most of the day digging emergency drainage ditches actually so didn't exactly stay dry!
    Next year!

indeed, a lot of pics of the flash flood problems in local rag this week; 3 years now I`ve missed the event too, although have ridden it previously. Rode 80% of route in better conditions a couple of days ago too (omitted last Newbridge>Galdestry section to tie in with home), on target for silver time too :)
  • Sorry to jump in. I have done the epic 3 times now but not this yr, but prevoius poster said they stopped taking entries after around 300 entries and when i tried it was closed.
Can someone enlighten me as to what is happening with it.

    thanks
    Peter
