i'd imagine its because the mens RR is the flagship event. apart from knowing the result and seeing possibly the last 100metres does anyone care about the womens race? time trial coverage is hardly condusive to thrilling tv, highlights arent exactly highlighting much.
as far as i'm concerned the less time having to hear "[enter nation] are attacking now in the crouching style of the former track [enter track discipline] rider [enter incorrect persons name]" the better."Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0 -
They had over 2 hours of highlights of the time trials and the womens road race on yesterday afternoon!0

My main problem with BBC's coverage relates to the quality of the commentary. No recognition of individual riders and tactics and moves totally misread. Without giving anything away, Hugh Porter and Cris Boardman completely misunderstood where one of the main protagonists was in the closing stages, even though it was obvious from home. There were even clues from the captions on the screen. It was possibly one of the worst gaffes I've seen in recent years of watcing cycling on the tv. Even Duffers would have done a better job!
The women's road race was as bad. He seemed to make random stabs at identifying British riders, and in most cases got it wrong.0 -
I didn't witness this myself but apparently during the live BBC coverage (red button I think) - the commentators announced they needed a break for 10 minutes and then for the next 10 mins the coverage was quiet. Professionalism at it's best from Mr Porter!
Also found the bits of Chris Boardman walking up the climbs in the middle of race bloody annoying - I presume he did this on the mens RR I watched the Eurosport coverage this morning fed up of the beeb coverage.
However at least they are covering the sport be nice if their Sport's Radio Station did the same - no mention of the ~TOB or the Worlds - but lots of inane chatter about the football they have lost the rights for.0 -
I started to feel bad for Porter. He knew he'd messed, and Boardman - who wasn't any less culpable, otherwise he'd have corrected him at the time - only wanted to distance himself from the blunder.
There was a brief moment early on in last night's online coverage where it cut to a loop of a roundup of the day's sports action. Not that there was much to miss at the time.0 -

If you wanted those highlights, why didn't you watch the correct program?

They do.
They do what? Mention it - didnt hear a squeek about the TOB and for the worlds they mentioned the winners in the bulletin but nothing else - i listen quite a lot but forgive me if you can point out a decent section of coverage - a solid 10/15mins discussion.
As for rights - no longer they only get half the games now - the others are on commercial, talk sport I think.0 -

Actually I stand corrected they gave the Contador doping scandal plenty of coverage including Nicki "self righteous pr**k" Campbell the opportunity to go on about it on the breakfast show when interviewing their cycling correspondent.0 -
I didn't watch the BBC coverage, as I have access to Eurosport and I like the insight of Sean Kelly. Hugh Porter drives me mad - he's always banging on about the various riders' track acheivements. Frankly I don't give a monkeys whether a rider is a successful pursuiter or points racer in the winter - it's hardly relevent in the context of a 260km road race. He even mentioned it when talking about David Millar........ie "Millar has posted some useful times on the 4000m IP on the boards of Manchester". No mention of the GT stage wins, numerous TTs and one day wins/podiums etc.0

just in response to being called a p!llock, this is what I did :-
opened up TV guide
Saw "Jill Douglas presents highlights of road cycling's World Championships." on at 1pm
recorded it
watched it
sorry if that was the wrong program0 -
With every respect to Hugh Porter's riding palmares, he's been a liability as a commentator for a few years now. The 'Gilbert-gate' gaffe just being a shining example of his diminishing ability to (a) identify riders, (b) follow the pictures on the screen, (c) read tactics, (d) do the simple maths when commentating on a Points Race. He should retire gracefully while he's narrowly ahead.Between me & Eddy Merckx we've won pretty much everything worth winning on a bike.0

I agree.
Frankly, I don't see why we need two cycling 'experts'. One decent broadcaster (who, if professional enough, will know his stuff) and one former cyclist would do fine.0 -

Nice to see that we have reverted to sending our criminals off to Oz so they can't bother us anymore0 -

They just sell the same product to different places in the English-speaking world, playing the media rights business to their advantage by making essentially one product and selling it to a number of different broadcasting territories worldwide. Yes, there's a reason Ligget is a millionaire and drives a Porsche. Their TdF shows get sold to Australia, S Africa, the USA and UK, with minor regional differences tacked on.0 -

though I have to laugh everytime I here the phrase 'heads of state'
and the other unfortunate thing with Down Under coverage and commentry is they never mention anything to do with the bikes, for fear of advertising or endorsment.0 -
