Say... That's a nice bike..
Trax T700 with Lew Racing Pro VT-1 ;-)0 -
That hasn't got "mountain bike gears".
Probably an audax or light tourer would be suitable.0 -
A Kona Smoke is worth considering.
You can still get 2009 models from here -

Has mountain bike-like gearing, steel frame, which is surprisingly comfortable.
Wheels are 700c (or 29er, I suppose) with decent wide tyres.
Surprisingly nippy on tarmac and strong enough to bump down a tow path.
I brought one for my GF and she thinks it's great.
I think the 2010 models might have better gears and grip-shifts.0 -

Sounds like you're after a road-oriented "hybrid" bike, such as Specialized's Sirrus range (other manufacturers do similar stuff). The ones at the cheaper end of the range have pretty low gears, e.g. a v. quick search revealed this 2009 model for sale at £269 pounds:-

Bikes like this are essentially flat-barred road bikes, but with more flexible gearing for the steep hills, and are fast bikes to ride.0 -
Oh sorry that Raleigh's out of stock. But there are loads of flat bar, touring type, hybrid bikes such as this:
