bad news for hoteliers and retailers of model post office boxes and union jack T-shirts

but fantastic news for the general British public - can we persuade them to take Macdonnalds back too, and eradicate the word "orrrsommmmme" ?

  • It's "get in the hole" I can't stand, do they shout that everywhere they go?
  • The ''orrsommmme'' bit is a bit unfair since the word clearly patches over a gaping big hole in the British imagination. Though I'm sure it will end up sounding as dated as ''perfectly spiffing''

Isn't it handy that they built that castle right next to the train station?

I once met an American at a party (in England) who asked, when I told him I lived* in Edinburgh, "is that Edinburgh, England?"
Although actually, as I was a student at Edinburgh uni, he had a point.

*never mind what happens if someone asks where you live & you reply that "I stay in Dundee", which is how Scots usually say it. Cue disbelieving "what, even for hoildays?" responses

but anything said in a lovely New England accent sounds so much better, one of the nicest accents in the english speaking world I think.

    Does that include Boston?

Many years ago walking along the Glen Nevis road an Amurrican couple in a car stopped to ask for directions for the top of Ben Nevis - they said they'd seen a photo of a car on the summit - of an Austin 7 carried up by students in the 30s..

I was in the tourist office in Dublin when a flustered girl from over there rushed-in requesting directions for a bus to Luton Airport as she'd to catch a plane in a few hours....she'd didn't understand the concept of Ireland being a different country on the other side of the Irish sea..
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I furkin hate the American accent as a 'language' but I'd far rather listen to it than Glaswegian for the rest of my life, at least I can converse!

Do you think it'll have that much effect though? Americas hardly a safe haven and far fewer legitimate targets exist in Britain, just make sure you don't visit England and you'll be fine.
