Hi,

Seen this:

http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/sp ... _15619.htm

Was wondering if this style of stand would damage the frame of either a Giant road bike or MTB, by damage I mean bend over time the top tube or so?

The hooks seem dubber coated, seems a nice bit of kit if it wont do any long term damage.

The frames will be perfectly fine on them.

being a bit of a cheapskate... would one of these suffice as a simple 'workstand' - i.e allow you to rotate the drivetrain to clean and lube etc? also, would cables running below the toptube not be compatible with such a stand?

Yeah for basic stuff it would be OK, for doing much work though then the bottom position looks too low and the top one too high, I imagine the bike would move around a bit to as it's not clamped - but for cleaning the drive train it looks OK. Shouldn't really cause a problem for the cables either, although if you have exposed inner cable under the top tube it might snag it enough so doing stuff like adjusting gear indexing wouldn't be possible.
