I have been a big fan of Michelin Pro Race 3 tyres - they really bring your bike alive. However with winter looming - and a puncture yesterday, I decided to put the Michelin Kryliions on for winter.....boy what a difference:-

Krylions
The Krylions were incredibly tight to fit - I even had slight trouble hooking the first side over the rim !. Today I went on my first ride in them. What a downgrade on pro race 3's - the bike felt less responsive and took more effort to get going. On the plus side I was slightly happier descending on them.

Pro Race 3
No real problems fitting these - and the bike just rolls with them on. Personally I found them a bit daunting to ride in the wet. Don't get me wrong, they didn't slip or fail to grip - I just felt like they might !
Pretty prone to punctures - especially if you hit a pot hole - like yesterday. I found that pumping up the tyres before each ride helped to improve this.

I didn't expect the krylions to be a racy as the PR3's - but I was dissapointed just how sluggish they felt. Come next spring I will definatley buy another set of PR3'S - not so sure about the Krylions though.

I have no experience with the Pro 3 but had several different Schwalbe's, Vitoria's and Conti's before I got fed up with punctures every other ride...

The Krylions, after more than 2000 miles, are still going strong with only the rear starting to show some signs of wear in the middle. No punctures at all and I don't care much about how hard it was to fit them 'cause I only did it once...

Might be slower than real race tyres and probably not fantastic in the wet as they have no tread but to be able to ride time after time on different terrains without punctures is a godsend...

The pro race tyres are probably more grippy in the wet than the krylions.

  • Pro 3's wont last the distance in winter , they do exactly what is say's on the tin . Race .
Krylions will easily clock up 4000 miles . you will be lucky to get half that amount on the 3's . two different tyres for two different things!

Yes and harder wearing usually = less grip, it just depends what you want.

Use both all year round although the PR3s do roll better of course. Some riders use the Pro races all year round.

But for winter riding Krylions are great ...

I use Pro3's and GP4000s. I have recently got cheesed off with the useless side wall that some Pro3's seem to have I have had a few split on me this year alone, as have other mates in the club. Good tyre though for all year riding when the QC is up to standard. Used Vittoria Pave's for the Tour of Flanders now that is a class tyre, expensive though but great grip and resistance to flats.

Got 2000 miles out of the PR3's and pretty happy with that. I think a lot of it is perception - I felt much slower on the Krylions - but looking at my riding history have been as slow on the PR3.
The Krylions seem pretty expensive as the performance doesn't differ much from Rubino Pro

    Not bothered reading this....

they are 2 totally different tyres, for very different uses.

Pro race are for racing and are sticky but wont last. Fast
Krylion are for training and will last. Not as Fast.

There just isn't a best of all worlds!

Mixed reviews here. Seem to perform better - but puncture more.

Could this be down to the rim? I have Krylions 25mm on Dura Ace 7850 CL
and 23mm on Mavic Open Pro. I can honestly say that I've not had a problem
getting the tyres on/off either set of wheels.

i dont seem to hear as much divided opinion about kryllions. most who've used them say theyre good, ive not punctured yet on them mostly dry riding. gatorskins are divided opinion in that review.

I haven't used too many different tyres - I've been commuting on Kyrlions for 2 years or so and had one pu*&*&5re. I did manage to get through my last rear tyre in about 2500 miles though so was thinking about something cheaper.

Bugger to get on my Mavics. Had to use a lever.
  • Krylions are good on puncture resistance but as the OP commented, they feel a bit sluggish vs. the ProRace3. ProRace 2 was IME better on p'ture resistance than PR3. Also a bit wider and more comfy. Wish they still made it actually.

GP4000S are IME about the fastest robust tyre. Downside is that they aren't very comfy.

Vittora Paves are comfy and robust. Not quite so fast as the GP4000S though.

I didn't need tyres but that offer was just too good to refuse, thanks.
All the black ones seem to have gone and there were seven when I started looking so they must be selling fast.

Edit; looks like they have all gone completely now.
