Afan - where to stay during the WRC?

Any tips on decent places to stay near Afan while the WRC is on? Me and a mate are thinking of heading up for the shakedown and start on the Thursday, then hitting afan on the friday. Not up for camping at all, bunkhouse might be alright as long as it's got somewhere to lock the bikes up while we're off in cardiff watching the start. Ideally looking for a bargain bike friendly b+b...

I wouldn't bother with Afan at all for a while, some of it is closed completely and most of the trails have diversions due to forestry work and some wierd tree disease.
I believe Penridd is closed completely and Whites, skyline, the wall etc are all affected by the forestry work.
Keep on driving to Brecfa it was riding a dream a couple of weeks ago!"Didn't hurt"0 -

Just checked the afan site and as it was the other week when I done W2 nothing is closed that hasn't been closed for most of the year, Penhydd and start of skyline is all that's closed. Maybe you should just check these things before putting people off a ride
As places to stay depends how much you're spending. The lodges by the 4x track look sweet but not cheap, also the hotel place that's pretty much between both centres is suppose to be great.0 -
No you didn't:Whites, skyline, the wall etc are all affected by the forestry work.
Brechfa is good, but doing the black/blue/green are only a couple of hours riding, IMO you should combine with a day at Afan, do W2 one day, and Brechfa the next.
If you stay nearer Brechfa (no recommendations, sorry!) then you may find it easier to get somewhere, it's only a little drive back to Afan.0 -
Awful lot of argumentative people on BR today.
Its just the internet guys."Didn't hurt"0 -
You argued though.
You wrote something, it was corrected, you got a bit uppity, so calm down dear!0 -
Its not about an argument, it's just you stated all trails are effected by work when infact it's only one that's closed (that we all knew about months before it closed) and one section of another, which has also been closed for months.
Just don't want someone missing out on a ride they wanted to do due to wrong information.0 -
Well your belief was wrong, and you were corrected, I don't really see why you're getting in a strop about it, underdog's right, it'd be a shame if they changed their trip because of that.0

I've done a fair bit of afan before so not too worried if the trails are open/shut. Thanks for the info though. The 'main' reason for going was to watch the WRC at margam park/cardiff, but didn't want to miss out on some afan action while i was up there.
Just wondered if there were any top tips for accomodation in the afan area (I'm going there whether the trails are open or not)0 -
Afan Lodge is really nice, excellent digs and the food is a bit special.
The Lodges at the top of The Wall are meant to be good too, I fancy they'll be a lot closer to the WRC stages too (providing they still go through Afan itself these days?).
Also saying the Afan isn't worth going to at the moment is a bit strong.
Penhydd is closed and had been since easter-ish, they have discovered some weird fungus but it would hasve been closed anyway. This also effects a tiny bit of the wall right at the start.
A boring walking path/fire road section of the wall is closed because of subsidance, but the deversion is actually more fun. Or you can park up at the small carpark at the otherside of Afan Bridge and miss all the diversions, plus it's free parking!
Whites is fully open
Skyline has two small diversions, but given it's c50ks long, you're hardly going to be short changed.0 -
cheers p-jay. I thought afan lodge looked a bit good, prices don't seem toooo bad either.
I'm pretty sure the WRC is going through margam park, not sure how close they'll get to the trails. Anyone else been around afan while the WRC is on before?0 -
The lodges up at the top of the wall are called bryn betwys lodges btw - I live in swansea but they seem pretty nice - theres a canteen and stuff there too for grub as well.
Afan lodge always gets good shouts too from what I've heard.
Inbetween - theres a travel lodge thing at cross hands which is cheap if not bike friendly. But otherwise its thin on the ground - you'll have to find a b&b probably your best bet if you want to be close to brechfa.Lapierre Spicy 516 XTR custom (2013) -http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=129323320 -
Depends how far you want to be from the trails at Afan, know a good B&B in Port Talbot (5mins from Margam) where my in laws have stayed a few times when they have visited.0
