Also @pollys bott re query on southern peaks:
If you're in the Holly Lane area, don't forget New Bridge Road immediately opposite on the other side of the valley, and a little further along, the climb up to Starkholmes from Cromford. And while you're in Cromford, the climb up to Middleton top is a good-un too. You can do it on road (straight up through Cromford), or offroad (the High Peak Trail, starting at High Peak Junction).
If you're after hill-climbing practice in the southern peaks, you could do a lot worse than start on the A6 in Duffield (I know it's not technically in the Peak district, but you'd not know once you start climbing) and then just swing up and down the walls of the Derwent valley on your way up towards Chatsworth until you can stand it no longer.....
Duffield to Firestone hill, to Belper, to Alderwasley,to Ambergate to Crich, to Black Rock, to Starkholmes to Matlock etc etc.....
A little further north:
The lovely moorland climb up out of the head of the Goyt Valley near Buxton. It starts nice and gently at the reservoir but by the time you get to the top, you know you've done a hill!0 -
I am in the Peak and had the morning off, so I went in search of some of my all time favourite climbs... including the lovely cobbled lane behind the church in Bollington and the all time great Swiss Hill (which is as steep as the Kapelmuur).
On the way back it got a bit wet and had to climb the Macclesfield forest and Pym Chair from the Jenkins Chapel on the saddle, as the grip was poor...
Tough stuff, but always amazing roads... it's always great to be in this damp part of the country

Ugo, if you're still in Whaley over the next few days and fancy a spin up a few more hills, let me know.0 -

Thanks, but I went over for a friend's birthday... so saturday was pubs and booze... which is a shame, as the weather was lovely. I came back south this morning and the weather when I left was even better... nevermindleft the forum March 20230 -

It was a very fine morning, and early on, the only people out were cyclists. Cat & Fiddle was thick with them, as there seemed to be some sort of event on. I even managed to enjoy the climb to Pym Chair on the way back0
