i,ve got a shimano slx on my trek and in first six months of use i.ve gone through 2 outer rings all ready( broken teeth both times ). is changing to a double and bash as simple as just removeing the rings and getting another set to suit the size i want, with a bash on outside. will i be able to adjust the front derailer to not go beyond the second ring.

yes that easy."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

The mechs have stopper screws which limit how far left and right they will move. yould should be able to wind one of the stoppers until it prohibits the mech from shifting any further than the middle ring.
And yes you can modify any chaninset to take a bash instead of the outer ring. It may be a good idea to change the middle to a slightly larger cog to get a bit of extra high end oomph. You'll just need to make sure the bash you get has the right mounting holes, and then long enough screws to mount onto the spider.0 -
So what size cog would you recommend to go with a bash guard?0

i went for a 36t middle and bash on mine as makes up a fair amount of whats lost from dropping the big ring, popped a 26t granny on for a hwile too but thats a really silly idea unless you have Strong thigh's loL! back to the 22 for me!Timmo.

my slx double n bash came stock with a 36t, it's a very good set up.
If you do go down this route, be sure to buy a bash that is specified to cover a 36t cog - if you get a bash that's smaller then... well... it won't be a bash guard
This way, even if you don't buy the 36t cog as well you always have the option to upgrade to it at a later date.0
