Brake pad compatibility

Hi. I tried this in the Buying Advice forum but no answers, perhaps someone here can help..
My early 90s Peugeot has original Athena calipers which are in dire need of replacement pads. Everywhere i look Campag pads are listed as post 2000 compatible, or skeleton brake compatible, chorus/record compatible etc. If i'm buying the brake shoes as well, does the compatibility come into play? Won't any shoes (even shimano ones) work as it's just a bolt through the hole in the caliper arm?
