Hi
Im looking to upgrade the existing v brakes on my hardrock and am looking at disk brakes.
Ive been looking at the avid juicys on Chain reaction for £50 each. would these be a good starter setup or is there better?
dont want to spend much more that £100 for both front and back though.
Thanks

Hi and welcome on your first post...depends on your budget, but Merlin Cycles are usually the cheapest...something like these would be ideal and Avid's are great brakes...the complete kit F&R inc rotors is £99...obviously they have more choice and more expensive kits but these will be fine

Spend the little bit extra and get the elixir 5's from merlin instead.
Far superior brake.0 -
Would go for the 185mm if there is no cost difference and you can get IS fit to fit your forks.0

Thanks for the welcome. They were the same brakes as the ones i was looking at on chain reaction.
are the elixir 5's worth the extra £35.
the 185mm disks are an extra £10.
how would i know if the IS will fit?
What's the difference between IS front and post front?
thanks0 -
Quite simple to tell the difference:
POST (holes into fork)
IS (hole perpendicular to fork)

Yes they are worth it.
Only worth it on the front.
Look at pics above
The way it attaches to the fork0 -
if you google "post mount" you will find a thread on here at the top of your results with pictures of post mount and Is mount.
oh sod it..
post mount fork:
Is mount fork:
Most frames will have Is mount on the rear.
You can get IS to post mount adapters which are very common as most brakes seem to be post mount.0 -

i have recentl changed from v brakes to discs on my specialized hardrock, and i have found the shimano m575's to be excellent, but i had to set them up myself, as the "ready bled" setup was naff. i also reccomend the avids, there currently being used by my old man on his rockhopper, and apart from contaminating the pads a few times (oops, newbie mistake) they have been trouble free and a good investment.Am i strange in that i actually ENJOY going up hills? Yes, yes i am.
