2nd hand guide for older bikes.

Hi,

I've started doing more road miles, and I am finding my current bike almost perfectly unsuitable! :?

My budget is short, or even non existent, so I will be delving into the second hand market. I guess it will be bikes up to 5 or 6 years old. I know little enough about current road bike, let alone any history, so I was hoping to get a few pointers.

1) Are there any brands who have tended to make consistently good frames over the last decade?
2) Ditto for groupsets and wheels!

Any makes or models that would be good to look out for? Even second hand it will still be an entry level bike.

Any comments, thoughts or ideas would be great, thank you.
