Crank removal for BB replacement

Help please, my daughter is trying to help a friend as he has BB failure.

Bike is a 2001 Trek Bruiser, it was bought second hand and had some upgrades, so BB/cranks may not be original, it has 'we the people' steel cranks (that is the only marking on them), my crank remover which fits all the other cranks we have is too small a diameter for the threaded section of the cranks.

Anyone know what tool we need? Also if anyone has the first clue as to what BB we'll find behind it that would be great!

    good guestion.

see if you can match the images on Parktools to what you have as i can see nothing from your pictures.

but at a guess a standard tool should do. but that is a guess.

  • The chances are Park Tools will make what you need.

If you can't find a match on their website it will be worth dropping Trek an email giving them as many details as possible including the frame number.

According to bikepedia those aren't the original cranks...and unfortunately there's no BB details. I know WeThePeople specialise in BMXs now so they may also be able to help.
  • Those are BMX cranks. They should have a bolt which holds them on. Usually you undo the bolt and the cranks should slide off. Looking at the bike in the pics, it looks like it has been well used, so a soft rubber mallet might be your best guess.
It'll be running a 3 piece BMX BB, but you need to knock the old cranks off to find which BB he'll need. Thankfully BMX 3 piece cranks are similar to old BB's in that you can often just replace the bearings (Though I'm not saying definately).

    Good luck

Thanks for the info, yes the picture was taken with the retaining bolt removed, as an engineer I should have known to just take a hammer to it I guess, but I like to be more wary with bikes than cars!

Doing some net searching they are indeed BMX cranks, in fact it appears WTP still sell almost identical ones, and it comes with a specific removal tool!

    Now where is Mr Sledge?

They look like they are WTP Royal 48 spline cranks, I run some on my BMX. Mine come off with a normal square taper crank removal tool, they are supplied with a tool but it's to push them back on not remove them.
As said though beat on it with a rubber mallet & they will come off eventually.

OK thanks, my normal crank removal tool has too small a diameter thread for the inside of the cranks, I'll get the sledge hammer out later!
