The vehicles, which are illegal in Britain except on private property

Didn't realise that. Why are they illegal?

Illegal to ride on the Pavement, not licensed to ride on the road (they don't pay road tax, you know).

Electric vehicles are exempt anyway, are they not?

They just aren't legal for use on the roads. As a powered vehicle they need to conform to Road Traffic law, which they don't. I popped the road tax thing in as irony.

They are illegal for use on the roads- as they are not insureable.

however, if that is the only reason, then that is surmountable as you can use vehicle on the road without insurance if you have made a sufficient deposit with the relevant office ( Think it is part of court system, but can't recall off the top of my head)

Wouldn't a Segway suffer the same kind of problems as the Daleks - can't get up any step or ledge higher than an couple of inches ?

You'd spend most of your commute dragging the thing behind you up all the kerbs, raised man-holes, wonky slabs etc...

    With these stats? (from Wiki)
The maximum speed of the Segway i-Series is 12.5 mph (20.1 km/h). Maximum power is 2 horsepower (1.5 kW) per servo motor. The i-Series is capable of covering 15–25 mi (24–40 km) on a fully charged lithium ion battery, depending on terrain, riding style, and the condition of the batteries.[18] It takes 8–10 hours to complete a full balancing and recharging cycle. For each 15 minutes of time re-charging, the batteries regain a mile of charge. The batteries also recharge while riding downhill and stopping, and by the Segway being pushed while turned off. The p-Series is capable of covering 6–10 mi (9.7–16 km) on a fully charged nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery, depending on terrain. It takes 4–6 hours to recharge, and regains 1-mile (1.6 km) for every 30 minutes charging.

It would probably manage one leg of my commmute, and far slower than on my bike.

I can understand electric bicycles, but the Segway is a (poor) solution looking for a problem.

I think some of you have missed the point of the OP...

The 62-year-old bought the firm in January which makes the “transporter” which uses gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction the rider leans.

I wonder if he stayed upright all the way down?

SORRY MY BRAIN JUST WORKS LIKE THAT!

I'd pay to see that (not much, mind you)

But anything that can make George W Bush and Piers Morgan have pratfalls has justified its existence.
  • Don't let Phil Daniels have one then.

Did they learn nothing from Daleks and ED 209. Must be able to handle stairs if you're going to do any serious chasing.
