This guy sells a lot of bikes (and has a lot of names)

I'm thinking of buying a Spesh Sport 2010 second hand off a guy locally and was trying to get an idea of how much it might be worth.

At £190, the one I found on Gumtree was very cheap, but Liam "need funds to upgrade to my first car."

Strange though, that Jon should be selling a Giant Defy 4 2010 from the same mobile number - another bargain at £210. He's "just moved and don’t have the space to store the bike."

And then there's Ash who has a Pinnacle Mean Streak 2.0 2009 for sale at £140 - again same mobile. He's parting with his "pride and joy as I have a lack of space in my house."

And Liam, again, who's selling a Globe Vienna 2 2010 for £150, with the same mobile, but - rather confusingly - Ash's email address. He too is "selling my pride and joy as I have a lack of space in my house."

I've seen plenty of adverts like that. Wouldn't take much for the police techies to automatically search for duplicate numbers with different names. It's so blatant though I doubt they care.

Some might be genuine, but odd that one number has so many names.

Try googling (click on this option after first search to get more matches "repeat the search with the omitted results included.")

    or
    07539497873
    as an example.

Never, ever, ever buy anything from Gumtree. Pretty much an unregulated spot for scammers.

I emailed the Safer Neighbourhood Team for the local area, suggesting they might be interested or they should pass it on to the Cycle Task Force - wonder if they'll get back to me.

That's a bit harsh. I've bought and sold bikes on Gumtree and if you're smart about it and ask searching questions then where's the problem?

Have you insisted on seeing any proof of ownership/identity?

You're right. I'm sure there ARE genuine items on there for sale and if you want to take the time to ask the 'right' questions then you can make sure it's a genuine sale.

But no matter what - I would never send money to someone off there. I would be happy to meet in person in a very public place, etc to view the bike.

But there are better ways to buy/sell a bike. On here for instance! :)
