Can anyone tell me whether I need a roller specific or old road tyre to use on rollers like I would need on a turbo trainer? Are rollers less forgiving?

    It depends...

... on whether your rollers are plastic or aluminium
... on what type of tyres you use
... on what type and intensity of training/intervals you are doing and how heavy you are
    ... etc, etc

Plastic rollers wear out and overheat tyres and tubs if you're working hard.

Turbo trainers are generally a lot less forgiving than rollers - for most people, normal road tyres will be fine on rollers. :D
