Hi.
I'm considering upgrading my road wheels, and I'm going for either Mavic Ksyrium SL or Shimano WH7850-C24-CL.

Which wheelset do you think I should go for? I ride my bike for about 90-100 km each week, and my weight is about 85 kilos

Both good. Mavic for bling - Shimano for performance... the choice is yours and yours alone.

I am looking at these wheels also but wheelsmiths have given me a price for some handbuiltswhich will come in arounf 1500g with IRD rims and Novatec hubs. What is the benifit of going for handbuilts other than the "custom" factor?

I am awaiting delivery of the same wheels. As light as mavics, more aero, stronger and all parts easily/quickly replaced. Oh and £300 quid cheaper!
It’s the most beautiful sport in the world but it’s governed by ***ts who have turned it into a crock of ****.

The benefit is reliability and availibility of replacement parts, mainly spokes and nipples. Custom wheels can be also built to suit your weight and type of riding.
Personally I can't see any point of buying factory "designers" wheels as they offer no practical advantages, just the nice look and they are usually PITA when something goes wrong.

I can hardly recommend Mavics after the ti axle in my Ksryium SLs broke recently and I'm still waiting for replacement parts from Mavic.

I am also waiting for some custom wheels from wheelsmith .....

Go for the Shimano wheels, are a great all rounder wheel, fantastic price @ merlin cycles at the moment too.

I've had them both but the 7850s were trashed in an accident this year and have now been replaced with shimano RS80s which in my opinion are as good, and the reviews back that up, plus you save £200.
As for the SLs.. they get used on Derebyshires country lanes and they're still near true after two years of abuse, the only difference to me is that the shimanos roll forever but they aren't as tough as the mavics.

    +1
  • Go for a pair of DT SWISS TRIGON. Thay are indistructable and light. The roads where I live are in very bad shape and they handle them no problem.
