I'm trying to cling on to summer.

The wife wants the central heating on for the 1st time in months... It is nippy, but nowt a decent jumper and socks can't handle.

Mind you, the arm warmers and jersey are retired for tomorrows club run, and the LS Assos intermediate evo comes out of hibernation....

Have you resorted to it yet?!

I have succumbed but as I am near Kiev it is a different climate, I am expecting it to be at freezing next weekend, but as I am back home in the UK for that week I am not too worried. :D
  • Nope, it's still Mediterranean weather up here on Tyneside. Lots of people still going around in t-shirts.

Nope, not yet but did have to dig out a blanket to watch TV late last night. Also sorted out my tights for tomorrow morning...but not the woolly ones yet. If I wear them now I won't feel the benefit in January
  • On today.

    First time since March

    (must order oil)

Thats what they wear year round. Still wearing shorts on the bike but have resorted to a gillet. No heating yet, shorts at home too.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Had the first snow on Cairngorm about 2 weeks ago and the heating went on here in Aviemore about the same time. Last night it was about +4C here.

Not settled yet, but still a few big patches left from last winter! I know a few folk who've skied every month this year. The kind of folk who look at the size of berries on trees and the like and saying we'll have the third "big" winter in a row :-)

I was still able to cross country ski to the next village and back at easter! Took it up because I couldn't get cycling, was out almost every day for 4+ months. Even had to get the shopping from Tescos on skis and a sledge at one point.

Endura 3/4's and roubaix ls jersey for my 40 miler today. A real nip in the air but the sun kept the temp perfect up here in scotland. Another week or two and it's full winter kit! Still haven't switched my heating on......i think i've forgot how to use it

I thought this would make a nice change to the "mudguards on yet" thread (standby for some coming your way soon!)

They are in the box for a bit as it looks dry tomorrow.

Club bibnicks look favourite for tomorrow, although I have some new Assos FI 13 S5's that are begging to get a try out. I could leave them in the box and just look at them for a few months?

I have way too much gear now, and enough jackets to wear one every day of the week. Some for sale in the classifieds if anyone wants a peep.

I'm using my dogs as heaters as I type this. Shame you cant wear them on your feet...

I should point out that Altnaharra in the Highlands got down to -1.3 one night in August. We haven't had any frost here yet but it's been close a few times, it's certainly been quite chilly the last couple of days.

I've never really seen the big deal with the Big Central Heating Switch-on, we just put ours on, at any time of year, if it's too cold in the house - and leave it off if it's not.

unixnerd, have you seen the ultimate snow geeks' hangout on Winterhighland? Or are you one of them? I'm not a poster there, and I've never taken a tape measure to a snowpatch in my life, but I'm strangely fascinated...

Scratch what I said earlier about the snow not lying. Had low cloud earlier and I couldn't see it well enough! Just been for a pedal up Loch Morlich way and it's thick down to about 3000 feet! See the webcam pic below, taken at 3600 feet:

  • no central heating yet, we still have the windows open -day and night- but the mudgaurds are fitted
  • I caved on my way home from work tonight. Arm warmers were on and full fingered gloves too. I was getting a bit annoyed with trying to keep the short sleeves and fingerless gloves. :(

Might invest in something to cover my ears this winter as I always seem to get really sore ears when I get inside after a ride.

And my lips just to to shit as well. Dry and cracked no matter what I do.

Chapstick, ~99p and it'll last all winter.

The heating'll go on when 2 layers of porrige can't keep the cold out.

  • Honestly, I go through more Vaseline than a porn company making an anal themed gangbang movie. I must eat it or something! God, knows what happens. Ten minutes after I put it on my lips are dry and feeling all cracked again.
  • After traveling up through France from the Dordogne area last week and being in tempretures of 26-32 deg all the way up to ferry port...10 deg can be a little nippy...I may be at home in body ...but my head is still traveling through the delightfull French countryside...as for the cental eating...I've moved the table into the middle of the dinning room

If I have a wet ride home and it's cold then the heating might go on to dry my baggies etc for the following morning but only for a few hours.

try something without petroleum in it, as this draws the natural oils from your skin, I make my own with beeswax and olive oil.

Best thing I bought for cold. Far better than an itchy hat and leeps my tabs safe from chill.
  • No central heating, and camping this weekend in the New Forest we determinedly had the tent doors wide open all night. Lovely. Certainly not warm, but doable, and worth it for the sight of the moon and the Forest at night, and the fully-antlered Roe deer pronking across the campsite yelling in full rut.

I have broken out the Gore Phantom for morning commutes though.

We've got storage heaters, so we tested them for the first time last night, make sure they're working before the cold weather sets in. Problem is they're then giving out too much heat all day when we don't need it. They're going to take a lot of getting used to.
