SIdeways play in rear mech top jockey wheel?

When riding i have a strange grumble noise/grinding feeling through the transmission.

I've checked all the mech adjustments thinking it could be a slight misaligment due to recently new cabling but not that ,that i can see.

I've checked rotation of rear wheel also thinking it might be rear hub bearing but again to no avail.

I can't see any bent links in the chain

It happenns in all gears (the middle set feels/sounds a little worse than others)

So i took the chain off to have a look more closely and checked the jockey wheels over, all seamed fine although i noticed the top wheel (closest to cassette) moves about 2mm either side (wobble).

Is this normal?

I really don't have a clue on bike maintenance and am only just starting to dable. It's the first time i've removed a chain and the first time i've noticed the sideways movement in the jockey wheel

I should add the rear mech is only a few rides old as well.

Yeah, it's normal to have a little movement in the top jockey wheel.
  • Many thanks, back to looking for a cause them :)

2 mm at the base seemed a lot to me

chain routed correctly missing the tab between the mech plates.

The top jockey wheel has a couple of mm of float to help it align with the sprockets, otherwise you'd have nightmare to get the indexing perfect to prevent it jumping between gears.

Does it only happen when you're pedalling, or is it constant?

Nope, and this is where i'm struggling, it's intermittant, not once a chain rotation but could have been once a cassette rotation and doesn't happen at really slow rotation just as you build a bit of speed

thinking about it i could take the cassette off tomorrow and take a closer look at that bit
  • I'll try taking a much closer look at alignment too, It would be more logical it was cable stretch induced as nothings that old.
  • Could be your freewheel hub, and/or bearings.

If the pedals are old you can also get an intermittent grinding whilst you pedal.
