I have a standard 18 mile route with about 800 ft of climbing. It includes a steepish half mile climb of 300 ft of about 1 in 9 average with 1 in 6 bits where I'm only doing 6 mph -then 2 minutes averaging 30 mph down the other side :)

Since I got my Trek I've ridden it 3 times in 69, 65 and 62 minutes. So average speed has gone from 15.4 to 17.2.

I'm assuming this must be mostly me getting to used to the bike and SPD-SLs after years on a hybrid with BMX pedals?

My guess is that I'll get it down to a little under the hour in another couple of rides (18mph!) and then the only improvement will be from my fitness.

All the same, I'm pretty chuffed as 17mph puts me half way between the 'beginner' average speed of 14mph and the 'vaguely decent' roadie speed of 20mph. Despite it being a bit hilly and having some traffic, roundabouts, junctions and me being rubbish at clipping in every time I stop!

Even in the rain that persisted the whole hour of the last ride I'm loving it :D

(I think my wife is bored of my new love already though!)
