hi guys
ive been snooping around for a while on here, bought a hybrid to get to work on, and want a road bike (boardman i reckon). also want to know the in's and out's of bikes so was thinking.......

is it worth buying a new or second hand one?

or

buy a boardman frame on ebay, and build it up so i understand the bike? would this cost more than just buying new?

cheers

Building it yourself will cost considerably more, I totalled up the £1400 Focus and was already at £1200, and still had the carbon frame, forks to add to the build

Pricey building it yourself, let alone costing of tools and your LBS to do those jobs you can't.

    Good luck.

I've built two bikes now and it does cost more when looking at new prices from wiggle and that. You also need to factor in specialist tools, cassette lock ring tools, bb tools etc.

However, you can save money buying second hand on ebay and can get some great bargains. I bought a nackered bianchi frame from ebay and stripped off all the campag gears and then sold the frame and forks seperate to recoup all my money again.

Once you have the expierience and tools it will save you in the long run.

The main reason I built my own bike is because it's 100% individual, exactly how I want it. I like white seats and black gearing so theres no messing around making mods to a bike you've just bought.

I'm hoping to build my own bike over the coming months. After I've found a few bargains I expect it to cost about the same as buying new but I'll know how every bit goes together and I'll have chosen everything myself. No one else will have the same bike as me.

All I need to do now is buy the bits and figure out how they all go together :?

You certainly can build a bike cheaper than buying complete. I built a Kuota Kebel with full Dura Ace for the same price as buing a complete bike with Ultegra. I didn't have to buy any more tools than I would normaly use for routine maintanence.

    1. Buy frame.

    2. Buy parts.

    3. Assemble.

  • Building a bike yourself can work out at a good price so long as you can pick up the parts at a good discount.

In January/February this year i build up a Felt F75 2008 frame and forks with a full brand new Ultegra groupset and Ultegra SL wheels for about £650. Chain reaction had a lot of Ultegra 6600 parts around half price at the time and the other bits were brand new from ebay.

Have a little patience and you will get a sweet bike for not much money.
