Hi,

I have a Scott Aspect 45 2010 with stock forks (Suntour XCR 100mm travel and lockout).

I'm looking to cuctomise and pimp by bike whilst learning how to upgrade and maintain it at the same time. I am going to upgrade the front end controls first.

I came across these today

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... VER-TK.htm

Are they any good? replacement/upgrade?

I can only afford upto £200 and these seemed a fair price.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Steven

  • found these also - http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop ... y_1532.htm

Seem good for the price but I am not sure on the differences between models.

Can anybody confirm that I have the IS mount on the Aspect - I am new at this and just getting going.

I am mainly doing road and trail.

    Thanks

    Steven

Recons & Toras are functionally almost identical but Recons have aluminium stanchions and are a bit lighter. They are both competent, workmanlike forks and a good upgrade from XCRs.

The brake mounts are not too much of an issue - all calipers are post-mount, you just need an adaptor if you are using rotors bigger than 160mm

    Hi mate ,

Yes your rear mount is IS, as are most. Front forks generally come in two flavours IS and Post mount, as your looking at a new fork and have a choice, I would go with post mount as it appears to be the 'new' standard?

Adaptors are available which will allow you to run IS on post and post on IS

Don't know too much about the forks though.

The new silver series Recon use steel uppers though, very confusing!

Merlin's description in that link is woeful, two different fork names, different pictures.

Silver Recons have steel stanchions but that picture shows alloy stanchions so either the description or picture is wrong
  • So are the sl forks a better choice to go with? They are both the same price and I take it both would be a good upgrade from the suntour forks.

Thanks again guys for the help.

The Recom TK is a better fork - the steel uppers are a bit lighter. Both are good upgrades.
  • Ok getting a bit confused now as on Srams site their recon silver 2011 look different to these at evans and more like the ones at Merlin apart from the colour of the stanchions.

    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/roc ... k-ec024488

I have asked evans if they will price match Merlin and they will.

Are they the same or last years model? which would you go for as merlin make no mention of the included pump and poploc remote lockout.

My finger is hovering over the buy button and it seems like a great price as at evans they are £250 without the discount

Any help would be appreciated. Are there any other shocks as good for this price? and am I right to go with the Recon Silver over tora Sl

All after market Rock Shox air forks should come with a pump unless they are listed as an OEM part then you could get anything.

The problem is that retailers are using the wrong pics and often wrong descriptions for the forks.

What are Evans matching to at Merlin?
  • Hi Supersonic,

Sorry for the late reply but I never got the email notification from your last message.

They are going to price match the recon which saves about £50. I posted the wrong link for it before. Its the recon silver TK. I'm still not sure what to do though.

    Thanks for all the advice.

The Recon TK silver is excellent at 125, it would be the one I'd get.
