Does anyone know the hill from Amersham to Beaconsfield on the A355?

Just as you leave amersham it kicks up pretty steep but doesnt have a sign to say what gradient it is.

Does anyone know what it is?

according to Memory Map, at its steepest (the first 800metres), it rises 60 metres (105 to 165)

that would be 7.5%, I think or 1 in 13.3 in old money.

  • Superb, Thanks for that.

Rode up it today and could not believe I made it up! Although not avoiding hills I still have not got my climbing legs yet plus had to ride it out the saddle as I could not get a decent enough cadence going in the saddle!

pneumatic - not being tech' minded, how accurate is that and can you do it for any piece of road? The reason I ask is that there's a short, steep hill in the same(ish) area that I'd love to know the gradient of.

  • If you're up for some climbing fun in roughly that area take a ride over to Wooburn Green, there are a bunch of short steep climbs going up either side of the valley there - my somewhat optimistic Garmin tells me that several get over 20% - actually there's a sign for one road which warns of 20% so perhaps it's not that outlandish

  • HonestAl - I used to live in Holtspur so am fully aware of the climbs around that area.

I was however just passing through on a loop from Ruislip so my legs were in no mood for climb sessions.

It is based on OS 1:50 maps with software on top to overlay spot height data, so pretty good, I think. Accuracy also depends on my skill with the mouse when tracing the line!

Anyway, tell me what you are after and I'll see what I can do in my, ahem, "coffee break".
