carbon paste - Essential?

How important is it to use a carbon paste when installing carbon bars in an alloy stem..?

Is it more a case of if it holds under the prescribed torque, then its fine or is it an essential component?

    Not at all essential, but worth doing if you have some to hand.

    It hold under a lower torque so you don't have to worry about over tightening. I've used some. :)
