Evans 6 Week service

I got my bike from Evans so I get a free 6 week service with them. Since I've done up the brake blocks, greased the seat post and correctly indexed the gears myself is there any advantage in making the 30 minute journey to get them to 'service' it?

Annoyingly I can't find the link to see exactly what they check...

I think it's a free 'stage one service' from the PDF above. So they check the BB and headset bearings and adjust if necessary. That's just a case of seeing if they wobble in the directions they shouldn't isn' it?

Hmm... This really belongs in workshop doesn't it? sorry! How can I move it?

Plus they check that the wheels are true - if I spin them they don't wobble so they're fine I presume?

Adjusting the brakes - they don't drag, they stop me perfectly fine. So no help needed there.

Checking the cassette for wear - after 6 weeks? Its' fine!

So, can anybody think of a reason for taking it in?

Peace of mind and warranty issues you may not spot.

Do you think they may refuse a warranty claim if they didn't check it over? Good point!

Although if I'd relied on their initial set-up there would have been a warranty claim for a new me as there were no brakes! "Collect it from the store and just ride it home" - yeah right...

Here's a radical idea. Why not phone Evans, ask them what they do and whether it affects any potential warranty claims if you don't have the 6 week check?

They did mine, but it's only 10 minutes away. Not much more than cable check / adjust & a quick once over as far as I could tell.

I rang them 5 times when trying to get the bike built so I could collect it and only got a sensible reply the 5th time. Forgive me for not brimming over with confidence in their abilities...

I would take it in. They'll probably ask you if there are any problems... here you can tell them not and so they'll just give it a once over.

It'll take about half hour so you could go for a coffee while they'e at it.

  • Its not a stage one service, its just to get rid off any cable strech and true the wheels, it takes about 20minutes.

Hence the coffee... cos if you're like me you won't be able to help yourself otherwise!

Nothing if you do it yourself :). a screwdriver, an allen key, half an hour and a bit of patience is all you need. Well worth learning how (lots of docs on the shimano site) as you'll need to redo it as cables stretch or if you replace a cable.

Each Evans branch has it's own charging structure so find your local and download the workshop price list (Gateshead one linked in my earlier post)

About the same as paying someone to tune your guitar. This is basic stuff. Come on folks.

that's not the problem; when i'm on high gear i experience slippage. i need to go on one of those trainers to actually show what i mean. having to tune it myself will be impratical.
