Garmin 205 Navigation

I am doing my first sportive on Sunday - the tour ride - up at Stoke. I have managed tp persuade the wife and kids to do the family ride - so I can only do the short 80k sportive.
Anyway, I digress ...I have download the gpx file - converted it to a course - and intend to use this for navigation on sunday. Only problem is I have never navigated using my garmin before.....what should I expect ...of course warnings ? or just follow a line....how good is it ? -
I know there will be other cyclists to follow - but reckon most will be doing the 160k - so don't want to follow to close !
