Getting a Road bike on a budget of £600

At the beginning of this summer I replaced a couple of rusty parts on an '80s road bike to try it out. Having done so, I have decided that I would like to get a newer bike and join my university cycling club, and possibly begin to dabble in racing or time-trials (but not triathlon).
I can afford to spend around £600 (am a shade over 6' tall with an inside leg of 35") and would like some advice on what to look at.

Having asked this question a few weeks ago and bought my first road bike, the advice seems to be:
- £500/600 is a good amount to spend on your first bike.
- At the moment, shops are bringing in the 2011 stock so you can pick up a good deal on a 2010 spec bike if you don't mind having last year's model.
- At that price range, the usual suspects seem to be Trek 1.5, Specialized Allez Sport or Secteur Sport and Giant SCR.
- Try before you buy. Go along to the shop and try out different bikes; they usually let you have a quick spin on them.0 -
I popped round to my local Evan's cycles, and they suggested that I should be trying to get a bike with tiagra shifters rather than anything lower budget than this..... But it was only their in house bike manfucturer that offered them at y budget, so I would like to get confirmation of this if I can, and are the pinnacle bikes worth considering?

Shop around... I got my Raleigh Avanti U6 (RRP £1000) for £600, and that is fully Tiagra equipped.
And I would agree that if you can find it, go for Tiagra as the difference between those and Sora is substantial!0 -
