my mate boughtthis telly from argos for the princely sum of 380 quid, i saw it in his house and thought it was ace so i also bought one and as i enjoy snooker in HD i cant help wondering: how much better would it look on a "better telly"
in the shop the picture looked just as good as the slightly smaller lg and samsung ones it was next to.
so apart from the branding, what's the difference?

Bikeradar = 4chan?
On topic, build quality is one of the things you get from a more expensive telly. Also the more expensive ones upscale non-HD content better, and a lot of them now come with stuff to increase the framerate for a smoother picture.
If you compared it to a £1500 Samsung, you'd probably see a massive difference.0 -
Sheeps, Its down to what you feed in.
A good telly with a good feed will give you way better results. The other thing that can be off is colour tone and black levels, but on normal TV this will be harder to spot.
But most importantly if you happy enough with the Piccy who gives a monkey's?0 -

This. Very much this.
Although, I tend to find the UI on more expensive tellies a little better. Designed by a slow 12-year-old, rather than a sick toddler.0 -
Lcd tv wise the only companies that make lcds are Samsung, LG and Phillips so if you buy a Sony for example, its prob got a Samsung lcd in it.Bikes are OK, I guess... :-)

thats the thing, im very happy with the picture, i was just wondering why anyone would spend more, a brief look around the net shows you can spend a considerable amount more on a 42 inch lcd tv, i wonder if my booze addled eyes would tell the difference.
this tv sounds really good too.
i wouldnt say this tv is better than my wedding day, but it's a close run thing.0 -

Not true anymore,
thats like a year or two out of date, Sony were slow on the uptake of LCD as they had invested in rear projection. But of course have now swapped market.
But other wise if you feed with blue ray the differences can be startling, and the best place to tell is dark but details scenes in films with lotso f motion
You will blur, shite blacks and so on a good TV handles all this way way better.0 -

It's still true. Sony TVs use Sharp panels. Phillips also use Sharp panels.
What you see in the shop will be different to what you see at home. Shops tweak the settings to make them look "better" and the lighting of the shop will be different to what you have at home.0 -
SHops like showing animations as they tend to always look good.0

Your tv has a ui??? Or are you referring to the built in tuner?
Differences in av stuff is hard to quantify, but bar the popcorn I think my setup beats the cinema.0 -

i reckon this is especially true in my case as i cant tell the difference so i reckon spending more would have been wasteful. im one of those folk who cant tell the difference between good and bad sound too. or good and bad fork performance for that matter.0 -

So if I stuff my telly with bacon and pies, the picture will be better?
Awesome! :shock:0 -

All TVs have a ui, how else will you, like, do anything with them?0 -
i'll do anything with you in a minute0

Who entioned monkeys?
You can trade monkeys for televisions now?
The difference, Sheeps, bewteen a good telly and a bad telly is that the good one will always do what it's told, and will cook you tea every night. The bad one might go and let other men watch it, which is infuriating, but they can also be ultimately more fun. Bad televisions are not a long term investment though, they'll eventually end up in someone else's house.0 -

Calling an on button a ui while strictly true seems a little unnessecary!0 -

Not hugely. Or not at all, in fact. Double-oh-360, you should be ashamed of yourself.0

What is a "Differenc"?0

Unfortunately I have to say I think there is a big difference between cheap and expensive tellys (annoyingly as I brought a cheapish telly and i'm kind of stuck with it). But it all depends on the person watching the TV (i have friends that can't even tell the difference between standard and HD - so it'd be a waste of money for them.)
Every so often me and 3 mates have a massive gaming session with 4 TVs:
On the far left is a cheap toshiba, on the far right is the latest LED LCD from Samsung, they are both showing the same screen but look at the black in bottom the right of the picture. The toshiba shows it as a dark bluey grey, where as the samsung shows it as properly black. This makes a big difference. The picture on the samsung was also far crisper and the colours were bold and not at all washed out.Santa Cruz Chameleon

I dont care really, as long as its watchable, personaly, I like a 14 inch Bush0

14" bush? Seems a bit unkempt. I prefer a neatly trimmed bush myself.0
