Fitting front lights to thick handlebars?

I've tried a few lights but none of the fittings screw together once they're round the handlebars (big gap). I think the handlebars are tapered slightly too.

Other than buying a handlebar mount (which I don't particularly want) does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

  • Have you already bought the lights?

I used a pair of these on the front which have an adjustable strap rather than a screw to position them.

Yeah, just don't fit them on your hybrid with 25mm bars, cut the excess off, then realise the holder no longer fits your oversized bars on your roadie
  • I've used them for a few years on my roadie with oversize bars, had no issues with them at all.

are the bars 31.8mm? common size for the central section on road bikes, then it tapers down

many lights ship with 25mm mounts, for non-tapered bars

if you've already got the light, what make/model is it?

if you haven't got a light, cateye ones usually come with the correct mounts, or you can get the mount separately

Neither would I have if I'd have fitted the mounting to my oversized bars in the first instance!!
  • Tried the Knog lights? Just bought some. They are made of rubber, and have no bracket, just pull the rubber round and it clips onto the back of the light.
  • If you have OS bars which taper close to the stem it can be a real pain to fit lights, often the best solution is to run them on the narrower section having run the bar tape a little less or fit a bar extender light thingy.

I measured them last night (circumference though) and it was just over 10cm so if anyone is up on their mathematics can you work out the diameter??

They do taper narrower to the side but unfortunately I have the new Ultegra groupset so the cables are all under the bar tape so it effectively doesn't get any thinner.

The couple of lights that I already have are the Cat Eye HL500 and the other was from Halfords

    circumference = diameter * pi

so 10/3.14, sounds like usual oversize bars 31.8mm

i think it's the H31 bracket you need for your hl-500, see the "buy now" tab...
