If I apply squirt lube to a brand new MTB chain, and this squirt lube does what it says on the tin. How often then will I need to degrase my chain?

Anyone on here use squirt dry lube?

    Never

Since it first appeared last year. I used it all year round it's ace.
  • Never, wow.

Blitz, so I won't even have to do an initial degrease of the chain, when I first buyt the bike?

I fail to see what the fuss was about with Squirt. I used a large bottle so gave it a fair go and had a few issues with it.

Firstly I completely degreased the chain before use - removed it and thoroughly cleaned in white spirit and then a detergent type degreaser and hot water and allowed to dry. Also thoroughly cleaned the chainset etc.

I found it built up on the jockey wheels and between the smaller cogs of the rear cassette very quickly so that when riding through longer undergrowth it acted like glue. The next thing the chain would be slipping as so much grass, weeds etc were stuck in the cassette. This has never happened with any other lube.

Also it doesn't seem to last very long - on a 15km+ ride the chain would be very noisy at anything over that distance.

It simply disappears in no time in the wet too.

I'm yet to find my perfect lube but have been pretty happy with Rock'n'Roll Extreme

I've used it on new XT/XTR chains and never degreased them. If anything it helps them stay like new.

I always apply it and leave it to do its stuff overnight. I park my bike in the small/small gears to avoid stretching the cables and there is a slight build-up of wax on the granny ring but it simply brushes off with an old toothbrush.

Never experienced any build-up on the jockey wheels or cassette. As per your other thread, one drop on the inside of every roller is enough.
  • shite in the wet and not very economical way of doing things but the dry is a different story. i can go a good while before re-applying, it builds up and drops off so it's pretty much self cleaning and for the Peaks, being millstone grit country, wax lube type stuff is about the best option to minimise drivetrain wear and keep things rolling. so here's what i use/do...

    dry - squirt
wet - white lightning clean ride
wet / p!ss wet / snow - finish line wet

Yup, I was pretty impressed with it on holiday, lasted longer than the dry-weather lubes I usually use, but it just doesn't seem to work at all back here, started chainsucking after about 10 miles of damp riding and when I got it home was full of grit and crap, far more than you'd get with, say, white lightning epic ride which is what I'd usually use. Coul really feel the chain grinding. So I'll keep it for the summer but won't be using it again when there's much mud around.

  • Thanks for all the advice and tips guys, it's really helped and I appreciate it.

Blister plus, I like the sound of your seasonal combo of lubes. I will and do ride in all conditions, so I think I will give your combo a try and see how I get on with it.

    Thanks,

  • I am also a convert to squirt. Never had to degrease my MTB chain since using it.

Wear doesnt seem to have increased although I don't document chain length.Just throw it away when its 0.75% stretched.

As for cack build up around jockey wheels, I get that regardless of lube.

  • Squirt is great.

The only problem is that it doesn't stay on long in the wet. To get around that, carry some on your ride and re-lube every 20km or so. It takes 2 minutes at most. Personally I think it goes on better when the chain is wet anyway as it uses the water inside the links to penetrate. If possible, it is better to let it dry before riding though.

Never had chainsuck from using it. But I do get serious chainsuck using 'wet' lubes which the cack sticks to.

I'm with Radioactiveman - jockey wheels get clogged whatever lube you use.

Don't know why but I have absolutely no problems using squirt

I can go months without having to reaply it in the dry and still a decent amount of time in the worst conditions. And it doesn't attract anything at all, my drivetrain stays nice and clean :D

And my jockey wheels only get clogged with thick mud, grass etc which they would even if there wasn't a chain there

Did I mention it keeps your drivetrain nice and clean

hijack.gifPeter413. I can see that you're a fan of smilies. This, Sir, is especially for you: http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/ spin.gif

(Sorry, can't comment on Squirt. Only recently received my free sample and haven't applied it yet).
