STI lever- too much play
my dad has shimano sora gearing and brakes on his tatty old giant, the rear brake is pretty uselss however.
firstly the brakes don't seem to release after theyve been used and stay pressed up against the rim. i've tried stripping them and lubing them up but it doesn't seem to have worked. does the tightness of the nuts and bolts effect this? how tight should they be?
secondly the lever has to be pulled to probably a third of its full range before the brakes even start to move. i've tightened the cable as far as i can but even with the pads against the rim there is a load of play in the lever. is the lever adjustable? any suggestions?
cheers

Have you changed the cable inner and outer?
Check that the brake blocks aren't catching on the tyre, stripping and lubing the caliper shoud work.
Do the calipers stick even if you close them by hand rather than lever?0 -
Disconnect the cable from the brake calliper.
Squeeze the calliper closed and release, does it move in and back out freely ?
Pull on the end of the cable and operate the brake lever and release, does it move freely ?
This will tell you where the problem is.
Most likely a sticky / corroded cable, either strip out the inner and clean / lube or fit new cable completeHe is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
It is either the cable or the brake main pivot. If you release the cable clamp on the brake, is it easy to operate with your hand? You should be able to grip both brake block across the wheel with one hand and squeeze it together, when you release your grip it should spring back freely to its home position. If it does, then it's the cables. If it doesn't, then you need to apply a generous quantity of light oil to the pivot point - WD40 will do for this, just spray it in (after covering the wheel and brakes) and squeeze and release the mechanism until it starts to free up.- - - - - - - - - -

As above. I would change the cable inner and outers. If its a crappy bike go to your LBS and get a couple of meters of the cheap outer (or take the old outers and get cut to size).
Lube the pivots too0
