Mr Goo wrote:The thing with SPotY is that if Paul Scholes gets nominated all the Man Utd supporters will block vote on the phones and contest will be over. Same as last year with Giggs (got as much personality as a monkeys backside).
And that, sadly, is the truth.
And Scholes's personality makes Giggs look like PT Barnum.Twitter: @RichN950 -

even though cycling is growing and continues to do so I just dont think it gets the recognition it so rightly deserves...........I'm not sure it ever will which is frustrating!
Think about it...............a footballer trains for a couple of hours a day and then goes home to his multi million pound house in his ferarri..............................a cyclist trains, and trains, and trains and trains and is a shininh example of what an athlete should be.
not fair :x
Hmmn market forces determine footballers wages..no-one is forced to pay or contribute, it's all voluntary.0 -
I'm voting for Gee Atherton... World Cup Downhill Champion, and cool footage from 'Follow Me' to accompany his win.
But DH is very niche, so I'm happy to go with Cav.
Lots of people say he appears to be 'cocky and arrogant' but in all the interviews I have seen he always gives credit to his team, and his lead-out. Maybe I just don't watch enough cycling on telly, but he comes across very well indeed to me, and you cannot argue with his talent and his achievements this year.Vitus Sentier VR+ (2018) GT Grade AL 105 (2016)

There are some others. Here's the top ten in betting at William Hill
13/8 Tony McCoy - finally won the Grand National after dominating his sport for 15 years (hardly international though)
9/2 Jessica Ennis - European Champion, World Champion last year
6/1 Lewis Hamilton - currently leading F1 championship. SPOTY runner-up twice
10/1 Phil Taylor - World Champion for the umpteenth time, but personally I'd find it embarrassing if an overweight 50 year old is held up as our sporting champion
16/1 Paul Scholes - won absolutely nothing in 2010. At least Giggs last year had won some trophies
16/1 Mo Farah - double European champion - 5k and 10k. If he beats the Kenyans at the Commonwealths (if they happen), I'll walk the award to him myself.
25/1 Jenson Button - unlikely, but still could be World champion
25/1 Mark Cavendish - the one who didn't get a medal at the Olympics :?
25/1 Graeme McDowell - won the US Open, that's pretty impressive in my book
33/1 Amy Williams - good at sliding
Just outside is Graeme Swann (40/1), who has been excellent all year and would be genuine candidate for me.
Not a vintage year, though.
+1 for Swann who's just had a great game tonight to close what for him has been an excellent season with an England victory. He won't win the award, of course, a cricket bowler just isn't going to get the votes and Strauss will deprive him of some of the cricketing votes for captaining a very...er...trying series. Still, I'm fücking glad they clinched the series against Pakisham!0 -
Personally my nominations, so far would be:
Cav, Swann, McDowell, (top 3) Farah, and, I suppose, McCoy and Amy Williams. Then I'm struggling a little.
Hamilton or Button get in if they win the WC (I think Webber may take it though)
I'm not impressed by Ennis missing the Commonwealths because she's tired, I'd rather Dai Greene or Andy Turner if they do the Euro/CW double.
There's probably a swimmer that deserves to be in, but I know nothing there.
Two rank outsiders:
Emma Pooley if she wins the Worlds (and she may)
Chrissie Wellington deserves wider recognition.
Paul Scholes and Phil Taylor - over my dead body.
I think McCoy or Ennis will win.Twitter: @RichN950 -

While last year's award was a travesty, don't have a go at Giggs for it. He's certainly not overrated. He's won more trophies than any other British footballer in history and always been a model pro.
It was only a travesty because he hadn't really done much in 2009, but he's been an absolutely top class sportsman.
spot on mate - and I hate MUFC!!!!0 -
btw - a footballer has won it only 5 times ever, although 4 of those in the last twenty years
cf:
athletics - 17
motor sports - 7
boxing - 5
footy - 5
cricket - 4
jumpy horse type stuff - 3 (no racing jockeys)
ice skating - 3
tennis - 3
cycling - 2
golf - 2
swimming - 2
1ers - rowing, rugby, snooker
interesting. I guess athletics covers a lot of disciplines, but not sure 17 reflects it's true popularity? maybe it's olympic coverage which raises the profiles?
cycling does ok with 2, all things considered.
but it's impossible to look at the full list without laughing (again) at the misnomer "personality" in some cases.
mansell, hill, twice each! princess anne, steve davis. beckham, little mikey owen and giggs. rusedski ffs - did henman make him look good???? faldo.
i'm sure some of the early winners weren't a barrel of laughs either.
still, gazza, beefy, freddy, lunchbox linford, daley, sir 'enery do bring a smile......[/quote]0 -

5/5 at the Isle of Man this year never to be beaten only equalled.
If it's about achievement Phil Taylor would win it hands down, world champ since god was a lad. Whether people on this forum class darts as a sport is irrelevent, it is classed as such.
Cav should be in with a chance as he does achieve and as has been said before, he actually has a personallity. Don't think he will though.Tail end Charlie

Much as Swann's had a great couple of year's at international level, didn't he get busted for drink driving a few months ago. Would be a bad example.
Jessica Ennis or Cavendish for me, McDowell won golf US Open but not much besides.0 -
BTW the only cyclists to have won it are Chris Hoy and Tommy Simpson (in 65 when he won the world road champs)
I recon they'll give it to McCoy as it's a sport they put on the BBC and there won't be another opportunity"I get paid to make other people suffer on my wheel, how good is that"

They've been a good spectacle this year.
depends if you regard F1 as a sport or not......
Er yes?A sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. In sports the key factors are the physical capabilities and skills of the competitor when determining the outcome (winning or losing). The physical activity involves the movement of people, animals and/or a variety of objects such as balls and machines or equipment. In contrast, games such as card games and board games require primarily mental skills and only mental physical involvement
Oh FFS......
1) Did you not see the wink? There are people who hate F1, feeling it is too car dependent, and I was just staring the pot.
2) Sorry, quotations to prove your point only get accepted if you use full Harvard style referencing. Wikipedia doesn't count......
....otherwise you just made it up!!
edit: Crap definition anyway. Some sports do not use objective means...or does gymnastics not count?
And I'm a Grimsby Town fan, so using the "entertaining" criteria, means football is not a sport.....0 -

Colin Montgomery.
Hasn't done anything all year but IF the European team win the Ryder Cup I reckon he will be in with a great shout. High profile sport, major event, appeals to nice middle class SPOTY voters.
If he's not on that list that implies to me you'll get longer than 33/1 on him.
That seems excellent value.

While I'd like to see Cav win, if McDowell wins, I won't begrudge him it one little bit. He'll have deserved it. Great today, and winning the US Open is a great achievement. Seems like a good bloke too. I think he will win, too.
PS Montgomerie won't be nominated. He's a coach/manager, and the people nominating know this. I can see him getting coach of the year though, with few other candidates.Twitter: @RichN950
