Which bike for newbie

Hi all, set myself a goal to do a sportive next year.Midlife crisis setting in..lol

Been out of the saddle for years ( mtb saddle previously)

Can someone point me in the right direction for a bike that I can train on and eventually complete a sportive on?

Budget around 7 - 800. Idont mind getting a 2010 bike in the sales if need be......
