1980's BMX novel. Any ideas to title?

Hi,
Was seized by a nostalgic thought over a BMX novel I'd read growing up, but can't remember the title or author.
The plot followed a kid in the UK who was (as far as I remember) a privateer hoping to get a 'factory' ride, and pitted him against a local hardnut rider (socially troubled) who rode for a factory team. Loosely remember it being set in, or around London.
Any thoughts? Help a man sleep tonight!
