Shin pads ?

Any reason why i cant ride wearing shin pads made for playing football in ?

Nope, see plenty of people wearing them.

I would personally prefer to protect my knees though

I wear football shin pads to protect my shins from pedal scrapes. Only £5 and they are comfortable and effective.

I also wear knee pads, proper mtb pads.

thats the my main reason pedal scrapes & slips, fed up with the metal pins destroying my shins !
