Hi,

I'm looking to get two jackets. One for the rain that can easily fit into the back of the jersey and something more suited to the cold weather. The rain coat has to be figure hugging, I don't want it to flapper in the wind.

How does the Altura stuff hold along? If so which Altura coats would I be looking to get?

  • I have the Altura Night Vision Rain Jacket; very good in the wet, you can tie up the collar and tighten the hem, and it keeps you dry and toasty warm.

It can get hot in there though!

    haven't tried altura

    for waterproof...

the castelli sottile jacket is good, very light, stretchy so stays snug and non-flappy, takes up about half a jersey pocket, there's a zip at the right rear so you can get your hand in to reach jersey pockets on that side, it's transparent so your jersey/number is visible

the castelli sizing chart is spot on, select based on chest size

only criticism is that the back could be a bit lower

there's also the assos climajet which is even better, it has a lower back than the sottile, but it is really pricey unless you can find a last year's model on special offer

aside from price the slight downside with the assos is that the fabric trim on the cuffs and bottom is white, so ends up black/grey from the road spray (the trim on the castelli is a sensible black), also the tag on the zipper is too big, you can see i'm struggling to find fault with it

i'd go for the sottile, pbk has some offers on castelli at the moment...

  • I have a Aldi windproof jacket, and a Altura yellow waterproof jacket. Waterproof jacket is quite close fitting. Quite thin, and too thick, a mates Nevis is like a regular walking jacket (too thick)

I would recommend you also get a non windproof jacket, sometimes wear that under my waterproof jacket (if it's a bit cold)

I'm not sure what Alutras lightweight jacket is now called, it was about £30.

oh get a hi-viz yellow one, obviously.

How waterproof is the Castelli?..I too am after a lightweight waterproof jacket...but I've just done a very quick google of that jacket and it comes up as windproof...How shower proof have you found it to be?

it is waterproof, castelli's description says "waterproof membrane"...

...if you click the review tab there's a reprint from a magazine review as well

maybe some water will be able to seep through the zip at the front, or in the seams, but it'll be tiny compared to the amount from perspiring - there's the usual boil in the bag effect once the effort is high enough, so i tend to ride with it part open unless i'm feeling cold
