Hi all,
new to the forum so please be gentle  Looking for some advice on the dura ace 7900 groupset and if it is worth upgrading to?. I have a spesh tarmac with 105 on it just now. I am not a competitive cycler and am not a member of a club due to work commitments etc however i do enter some events during the season. Weekly mileage is about 130miles give or take, and have already upgraded my wheels, so thinking of upgrading the groupset but looking at the price of D.A 7900 jeez!!, is it worth it for a couple of sportives a year? I have an Allez to get me through the winter months so was going to take the 105 off the tarmac and put it on the Allez. Looked at D.A 7800 but is still pricey and if paying that much for the 7800 , I mayaswell go the whole hog and get 7900!. So if anyone has any views on the 7900/7800 or what to upgrade to it would be appreciated , cheers

Definitely not worth an upgrade, potentially worth it when buying a new bike. But the upgrade cost is more because you don't get the economies of scale when buying a bike already equpped with it (the manufacturer can get Dura Ace cheaper than you can).

For me, the sweet spot in Shimano road componentry is Ultegra. 105 is perfectly adequate for someone at your level.
  • Cheers Dodgy,
Confirmed what I already thought, so guess i will just stick with the sensible option and keep on the 105 , at least the wife will be happy

IMO upgrades on components are only worthwhile when you break / wear something out - upgrades for the sake of upgrades are pretty pointless
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I have Dura Ace on one of my bikes and it is a great groupset. You can buy the full groupset from Merlin Cycles for just over a grand.

I would not recommend an upgrade for you though.

Dura Ace is expensive to upkeep as individual replacement parts have a high retail price

Ultegra 6700 at half the price would be the best option and if most people were honest with themselves, all anyone (other than the pros/serious club racers) ever really need.
  • My nicest bike here is a cervelo with full dura ace groupset ( apart from zero gravity brakes ) and it is superb , I've got a cannondale in France with full ultegra groupset .
I move from one to the other and , when in France, always think how little difference there is in the ride.
Dura ace is fantastic ,if you are happy to pay the extra for your number one bike, in reality there isn't an awful lot of difference ,so save your money !

    cheers Bob

+1 for all the above but if you really want to upgrade something then front & rear derailleur to Ultegra would be my suggestion.I was forced into this change on my Roubaix a couple of years ago & Ultegra definitely shifts better IMO.
  • Thanks all for your views, looking like upgrading to the Ultegra as online there seems to be nothing but positive reviews and a hell of a lot cheaper than D.A. The 105 is really reliable though but after having it for 2 yrs now it sometimes doesnt shift as fluid, so will go with the ultegra. Cheers

Does the 105 still shift well? Does it have 10 gears? Very little point upgrading 105 --> Ultegra if the answer to both of those is yes.

And your cables are OK ? I'd look at those first.
