rubbish roads

Is anyone else experiencing road works by them. There are loads of roads round here that were more than ridable and have been resurfaced....well actually a thin veneer of tarmac has been laid and what seems like the pointiest gravel simply spread over the top.

Even in a car the surface is rough, but on a bike, dreadful.
The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.

  • If there's one thing I'd like to see outlawed it's the surface dressing of roads. It's a pointless waste of money, causing damage to bikes, motorbikes and cars, and is a real danger to cyclists and motorcyclist.

It can give a lot more grip in winter if it's done right. There's been a fair bit of that in Aberdeenshire this summer and while it's annoying until it beds in it offers much better grip.

Up in the Highlands our council (who should know better) have recently put in a few new roads with a silky smooth surface that has almost no grip. A friend in the tar business says it's meant to be super long lasting. I'm expecting chaos the first time it snows on them.

Check your bike frame for tar.
A few years ago they did a stretch of my commute in the height of summer. I was still cleaning off tar specs, weeks or even months later.
