I found a 34 to be great help climbing steep hills and pinches out of creeks.
Comparing the 22/32 to the 22/34 ratio there is a 6.25% difference; it's a big step.
If you have knee problems or ride in steep terrain it's worth having.0 -
qgwp - I think you'll notice the difference. i swapped over a couple of years a ago and am now 37, had two knee opps and sadly still smoke, but 11-34 still alows me to kick the ass of my younger riding buddies up the hills
Then again i'm all for making the painfull stuff on your bike easier. the comments of just toughing out or manning up - balls to that!0 -
My new bike is 11 speed (11 cogs on the back) and 2 on the front so that makes 21 gears, right? So what's all this 32/34/36

Why the five year old thread resurrection for that?
2x11=22 anyway, so your maths is shite as well!
32/34/36 were the largest sprocket sizes you were likely to see on a bike in 2010 pre 11 speed and pre expanders.
I'll give you 1/100 for actually managing to post something. Still as you mostly post as a roadie it is to be expected I guess.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -

I was reading this thread on my phone, I had no idea which board it was in or that it was 5 years old.

He sounds like a moron!
Either a roadie or a moron. Basically the same thing anyway.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Go for the bigger cassette. It will make no difference for the rest of the range but it gives you a safety net when you hit something incredibly steep. I Run XX1 and have just got back from holiday in canada. In the UK I use a 36T chainring up front because the hills are not that bad but over there I struggled on some climbs with a 34T. Its not about power a lot of the time either. If you have a technical uphill or loose ground beneath you. It means you can not put power down and jerk forward with every pedal stroke. A smaller gear will enable you to choose a good pace to remain in traction and get up the climb.0
