Single Speed Chainset.

I've recently finished my build for a hardtail mtb, and it's brilliant, but, one thing I've been wondering is having a single speed Chainset, I more than likely won't get one now as I've just forked out buying a 3 speed,
But just wondering any benefits and dis-advantages of having one on a mountain bike, as Im running a 9 speed and never change gears on the front.
Thanks

If you never change gears then why not go for it? Less weight, simpler. You will probably need a chain retention device though. No disadvantages if you are staying in the same ring anyway.0

Would they still work having single speed on front and 9 speed on back still?0

Yeah, sure! Will need a slightly shorter chain, but many use 1x9 systems. It could be a simple as removing the outer and inner ring, though a single speed specific front ring is preferable (as has no shifting ramps)0

Ah right Brill I'll look into it, going on a decent ride on sunday so I'll really see how much I'm bothered bout changing my gears. But usually I keep to one, never use all 3.0

this is my all-mountain (6" x 6") setup running a 1 x 9 gearing system with 11-34T 9 speed cassette and 38T DH chainring at the front with an E13 LG1 chain device to keep the chain under control
works brilliantly and I am very happy going up hills, along singletrack and down the hills!
depending on your local terrain, your strength / power and riding style you may want to run a smaller chainring like a 34T or 36TCall 01372 476 969 for more information on UK\'s leading freeride park - Esher Shore www.eshershore.com0 -
