I've lived in my house for around 10years now and when I moved in there was 2 old sheds at the bottom of the garden that the last owner build and tbh they were crap, no doors on them and rotten floors ect but I never had the cash to do them up but this year I had some inheritance money and decided that I needed to do something about the sheds !

As the kids are getting bigger (10 and 4) it would be nice for them to have their own space....oh and maybe a bit of room for my bikes as well and so the grotto build began :)
Now I was on a limited budget so we did all the work ourself (bar putting the cabin together) with the help of friends and family inc the kids and the wife so this project has taken about 6 month's and a lot of swearing . I searched high and low on the web for a cabin that fitted my vision of what I wanted but there was always compromises i.e. size layout ect in the end we found a local guy that was willing to design and build the cabin that I had in my head, and he was a great help through out the whole project. So first job to take down the old sheds, overgrown trees and 10 years of junk + 2 bee's nests, then new fencing which was mistake, once I had levelled the ground for the base I found that the rear fence was not level should have level the ground first oh well looks OK now but...
Lay a base by borrowing some shuttering and making up a wood frame hired a concrete pump and pumped in 8meters of concrete levelled it and wait :). Then let the guys put up the shed, then I painted and put the roofing shingles on and well.... lets just say that I'm VERY VERY happy with the end result :)
Lot of effort and times that I thought maybe I had bitten off more than I could chew but the whole family is happy and I have a bike workshop to be proud of so alls good !

I'm afraid Carlsberg wouldn't build that Shed, due to the fact it lacks an indoor jacuzzi with 12 women pornstars bathing in it.
  • Also i noticed road bikes in there :P hehe
  • Nice work, my kids would love a den like that.

The windowed doors do look a little flimsey though, is it alarmed ?

Does it have a workbench complete with vice, also tool storage?

Should do otherwise I'm revoking the man shed status I gave it earlier?

Yer its got a monitored alarm with a dialer system so it rings and text's me and my works if its lonely lol as well as cctv inside and out :)
The space at the side is for a built in BBQ (next year) so the 12 porn stars can do the cooking before they get in the jelly filled paddling pool :P
And as for the child labour i thought this country was built using child labour

Call yourself a man whats wrong witha wheelbarrow? LOL
  • Your worry now will be the risk of somebody dumping the bikes and tv on the lawn and stealing the sheds.

Rest assured it has plenty of tool storage including work bench with roll out tool cabinet, wall cabinet and parts cupboard plus the all important vice and bench grinder :) I am however short of a compressor ! :P
Planing permission was a gray area tbh as 1. It was replacing a existing structure 2. Its ridge line is below 2.6 mts 3. its not a permanent structure. But its foot print is bigger than the allowed 26/30 sq mt (cant remember the exact limit ?) There is other things that i had to watch as well like keeping .5 mtr from boundary even though the old sheds were the boundary ! Hence the new fencing . I did however speak to the planing department explain my plans and got informal planing permission ? I must admit i was half expecting a visit from the CC planing department after it was built
  • I beleive if you build a garage you can get away with quite a big building too so put a garage door on the front.
I think with a garage you just need to build to building regs and you should be fine although there is some clause it must not cover more than half the area of the avaialble plot and must be a certain distance from the house think its 10 meters.
Check with your local planning office as this will vary on where you live especialy if its a listed building or you live in a national park
Most of the local regs should be online
  • Actually been thinking about getting an old container for security and claddig it with panneling so the neighbours are not too pissed off!
  • One of the guys around here has an old container for his bikes.

Lovely... I'd armour it up a bit myself, alarm or not a bit more security couldn't hurt. But still, I wants it.

The doors do have dead bolts/drop bolts on them, windows are double glazed with security locks as well as wall anchors bolted through the walls with boxed backing plates and shear bolts and a floor anchor bolted under the wood floor into the base, Bikes are secured to the anchor points with a mix of D locks and boron chains with shackless locks ! We are surrounded by old retired folk that spend all their days sat at their windows  as well as a retirement home to the back of us with a 24hr security watch oh and I've spiked all the rear fence tops ! TBH if they get the bikes away from that lot i think they have earned them
Oh and thanks for the good comments i must admit I'm quite proud of the way its turned out all be it i would have preferred not to have had the inheritance money .... :(
