had a major otb today at glentress and have damaged my front wheel

i let the lbs at glentress have a look to see if it can be trued but he reckons that the rim has a significant buckle in it that would cause too much stress on the spokes and flange if it was to be trued

he reckons that the hub would have taken a lot of stress and will be fine to rebuild on, is this true?

the wheel is a chris king iso hub, mavic xc717 and dt swiss spokes

could anybody recommend a quality rim to replace this for a 14 stone rider who mainly rides xc/am

ZTR Crest or Flow, if your 717s have been alright to now I'd go with Crests, if you want something much tougher for not much more weight then Flows.
  • i wanted reassurance that the hub would be ok to rebuild on, wouldnt want to set up a new wheel only to discover late on that the hub is weakened

for those who have totalled wheels before, is this geuinely the case?

i have had this wheel for 5 years and it has only had to be trued once, now its RIP

a lot of riding i have been doing lately has put the wheels under more stress which leads me to believe that i need a stronger rim if i want to progress

The guys in the hub know their stuff when it comes to wheels, I wouldn't use it again I'm afraid
  • Seen some pretty nasty must-jump-up-and-down-on-rim-to-get-home type rims that have been trued. It's the up and down that is problematic generally rather than the side to side.

LBS may be shocked at first but when you straighten out the rim in the previous "recommended" method so it won't look so bad they generally just get on with it and true the wheel.

Worst case it won't come out perfectly true but since most wheels end up like that after a couple of rides anyway not sure I'd be concerned. As previous it's the up and down that is a booger.
