hi all,

i currently use Shimano PD-M540 Pedals and am looking to upgrade my peds and shoes to proper road ones.

any advice on what pedals to go for?

i'm looking for something mid range (i.e. not crazy expensive) but something that will last and doesn't weigh a ton.

also are all the different makes (lok, shimano etc) compatible with most road shes?

I too am thinking of making the switch. Currently I have some Shimano mountain bike shoes and Shimano A530 road pedals. I have my eye on a pair of Wiggle's dhb carbon shoes but don't know what's the best thing to do about pedals. It seems to me that with SPDs, the clipping points are very close together, front-to-back, compared with other cleats. Maybe this doesn't matter, but I do wonder.

  • offers on ultegra pedals at the moment, got some 105's and ultegra too. And A520, had M520. Look for shoes with three holes in a triangle. Others like crank brothers, look etc never tried them
    Say... That's a nice bike..

I use look on my best bike and Time on my training bike and I much prefer the Time pedals they are a little more difficult to clip in but I like how you can move your foot towards or away from the crank by swapping the cleats. I've got wide feet so this stops my shoes from rubbing on the cranks. Also the cleats on Time last a lot longer than the look cleats.
  • Speedplay Zeroes come in chrome-moloy for about £90, I think (£10 more than the I-CLIC). Weight is 105g each.

I use Zeroes and really like them. They're very simple to click into and have excellent float adjustment - anywhere between 0 and 15 degrees. They're dual sided entry too, which is nice.

I'm not all that familiar with the other brands, but someone a while back chimed in saying that Shimano pedals were over engineered and bombproof. I've had a set of DA pedals for 6 or so years now and have NEVER done anything to them(ok - a little oil on the rear clip). Now that's gotta be worth something. Not saying that other brands won't give you good service but I've never had reason to curse my Shimano's.

+1 that's what my next pair will be.

I really want a double side pair as my Shimano 105 are a real arse in traffic, which I have to go through as I live in a town center!

  • There's a guy on eBay selling the new 105 pedals with cleats for £35. Cleats alone are normally £12-15...
