looking at heading up to glentress in the morning, just wanted to know what facilities are there, showers, cafe, etc.

its going to be a 3 1/2 hour drive for me but i wanted to get up there to experience this place before the year is out and i have a day to do it

which route would benefit most black or red?

any gen? thanks

  • Evening,

Glentress has showers, bike shop and a cafe.

I would ride the black route... absolutely awesome! It's quite possible to ride the black and then the red (after a quick respite(lunch)).

I'd highly recommend the Soup + Panini

    Enjoy

  • I'll just add that all the facilities are in the bottom car park (as you go in), at the top car park (by the freeride bit) there's only some portaloos.

Red route is the most popular... a lot of people claim the black is just longer and no more "fun" I've no idea how accurate this is though!!

Great facilities at GT- the showers are just in a portakabin so quite basic but that's all you need. Bikewash, decent bike shop, very good cafe (looks a bit rough but the food's ideal riding food as you'll be able to tell from the massive array of cakes). Nothing more you could want really.

Black and red are pretty different, red is faster and smoother, the black's pretty worn in so it feels a bit more natural round most of it. It's not a hard black but then the red's not a hard red ;)

If you can only do one, do the red IMO- one of the best things is you can double back and do most bits again if you want, it's not just a simple loop, it's very intertwined. takes about 20 seconds to get back up from the end of pie run to the start, frinstance, or a minute to get from the end of spooky woods back to the start of spooky climb. Something I'm surprised more trail centres haven't figured out really. None of these wee double-backs are signposted but the map's clear. And you can mix in bits of the different routes too, like, you can do lombard street etc on the red then go straight back up the hill and do XX and the Bitch, and the Wormhole, on the black.

The black might actually be better- and some of the best stuff isn't on the maps at all- but the red's the one you're most likely to have a great time on if you've only got one day. When people say they "did glentress" that's what they mean.
